Three hours south of Perth on a strip of land between two lighthouse capes, Margaret River is Western Australia's premier food, wine, and surf region. Around 200 wineries plus the country's most consistent left-hand point break.

Margaret River was first planted to vines in the 1960s after a now-famous viticultural report identified the region's climate as similar to Bordeaux. The first commercial winery was Vasse Felix, established in 1967. Today there are around 200 producers, accounting for a small share of Australian wine by volume but a disproportionate share of premium production. Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon blends are the regional strengths.

The coast runs for 130 kilometres between Cape Naturaliste in the north and Cape Leeuwin in the south, where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. Surfing is the other defining feature: the surfing reserves at Surfers Point, North Point and the Box are home to the WSL Margaret River Pro every April. Outside of surf and wine, the karri and tingle forests in the eastern half of the region are the tallest hardwoods in the country, with several treetop walks.

The region's main town is Margaret River itself, with smaller villages at Cowaramup, Yallingup, Dunsborough, and Augusta. Most travellers base themselves in one and day trip the rest. The drive from Perth takes 3 hours.
