Vasse Felix
Margaret River's founding estate
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Vasse Felix was planted in 1967 by Dr Tom Cullity and is recognised as the founding wine estate of the Margaret River region. Nearly 60 years on, the property at the corner of Caves Road and Tom Cullity Drive remains one of the region's most respected producers, known especially for Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and the flagship Heytesbury wines.
The cellar door sits within a beautifully restored heritage building surrounded by lawns and mature trees. The Wine Lounge is a relaxed, walk-in space where guests can order wines by the glass alongside a grazing board of charcuterie and regional cheeses, making it as much a leisurely afternoon stop as a formal tasting experience. The tasting room offers structured seated flights including the premium Icon wines for an additional fee.
The Vasse Felix Restaurant is widely regarded as one of the best in the region, serving a modern Australian menu that draws on South West produce and is designed to complement the estate wines. Reservations are recommended, particularly for the weekend sitting, and the light-filled dining room overlooks a sculpture garden.
For those wanting to go deeper, guided vineyard tours depart daily and take small groups through the estate's older blocks, where some of the original Cabernet Sauvignon vines planted by Tom Cullity in the late 1960s are still in production. Bookings are required for larger groups.
