Lake Cave
Underground lake and wonder
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Lake Cave is the deepest show cave in the Margaret River region and the only one with a permanent underground lake. Its crowning feature is the suspended table, a delicate calcite formation weighing over five tonnes that appears to float above the still, mirror-like water below. Fully guided one-hour tours depart regularly, with a maximum of 30 guests.
The descent into Lake Cave begins with a steep staircase through a sinkhole opening, framed by tree roots and ferns, before opening into a series of cathedral-like chambers. The stillness of the underground lake reflects every stalactite overhead, creating a doubled image that stops most visitors in their tracks.
The suspended table is the cave's centrepiece, a fragile aragonite formation hanging from the ceiling over the lake. Guides explain how such formations grow barely a cubic centimetre per century and why even changes in air movement from visitor numbers must be carefully managed to protect them.
Lake Cave is located within Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park and is managed by the Capes Foundation. Bookings are strongly recommended during school holidays, as tour numbers are strictly limited to protect the cave environment.
