Logans Beach Whale Nursery
Whales calving close to shore
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Logans Beach is the only established southern right whale nursery in south-eastern Australia. Each year between June and September, female southern right whales return to the sheltered waters of Lady Bay to give birth and nurse their calves, often swimming within 100 metres of the sand. A purpose-built platform in the dunes provides free, accessible viewing year-round.
Southern right whales were hunted almost to extinction in Australian waters during the 19th century. The population off the Warrnambool coast is now slowly recovering, with an estimated 300 individuals in the south-eastern Australian group. Pregnant females typically arrive at Logans Beach, disappear briefly offshore to calve, then return with their young for the rest of the season.
The viewing platform sits in the dunes overlooking Lady Bay and is ramped for wheelchair access. It is open around the clock at no cost, and interpretive signage explains whale behaviour and conservation status. At peak season it is common to see a mother and calf resting in the shallows for hours at a time.
Visitors should stay on the platform or the beach and avoid entering the water near the whales. A marine exclusion zone operates from June to the end of October each year to protect mothers and calves.
