Martindale Hall
Grand colonial mansion in Mintaro
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Built in 1879-1880 for pastoralist Edmund Bowman, Martindale Hall is a 32-room Georgian mansion with Italianate sandstone detailing set on a sweeping estate at Mintaro. Now operating as a living heritage museum, it lets visitors wander through meticulously preserved rooms that convey the grandeur of late-Victorian pastoral life. The hall featured as Appleyard College in the 1975 film Picnic at Hanging Rock.
The hall was constructed in just two years using locally quarried sandstone and imported English fittings. Its 32 rooms include a seven-room underground cellar, ballroom, billiard room, and library, all dressed with period furniture and fittings largely unchanged since the late 1800s. The parquetry floors and ornate timber joinery are among the finest examples of colonial craftsmanship in South Australia.
Visitors move through the rooms at their own pace, guided by interpretation that traces the lives of the families and workers who called the estate home across four generations. The estate grounds offer peaceful walking between the formal garden beds, outbuildings, and the surrounding pastoral landscape.
Martindale Hall is run by local hosts who bring genuine warmth to what might otherwise feel like a static museum. Group tours can be arranged in advance, and the property is also available for private events and overnight stays.
