Maxwell Wines
Wine, mead and the famous maze
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Maxwell Wines has been part of McLaren Vale since 1979, building a reputation for bold estate-grown Shiraz and Grenache alongside something most wineries cannot offer, Australia's leading meadery. The cellar door on Olivers Road combines wine and mead tastings with an award-winning menu, a children's hedge maze, and fine dining at the Maxwell Restaurant.
Guided tastings cover either the wine range or the mead selection, which has been produced on site for decades. The mead flights are a genuine novelty even for seasoned wine travellers, Maxwell crafts traditional still meads alongside sparkling and flavoured styles, all from local honey. The cellar door is open seven days a week and has a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere thanks to the maze that keeps younger visitors entertained while parents linger over a tasting.
The Maxwell Restaurant has earned South Australian Restaurant of the Year recognition and is open for lunch on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Maxwell has received Best of Wine Tourism recognition for its culinary experiences, cementing its reputation as a destination for serious food and wine enthusiasts.
