Mikkira Station Koala Sanctuary
Koalas in the wild manna gums

Mikkira Station is a privately owned sheep property 25 km south of Port Lincoln where more than 50 wild koalas live permanently in the manna gum trees. Unlike zoo encounters, these animals are entirely free-ranging and visitors walk the bush tracks at their own pace, looking up into the low branches to find them dozing or feeding. Kangaroos and emus also roam the property freely.
Day visits are self-guided and can be as short or long as you like. Permits are required and can be purchased at the Port Lincoln Visitor Information Centre, a local service station, or on arrival at the on-site office. The landscape of manna gums and giant yaccas is distinctive and worth exploring beyond the koala spotting.
Camping is available on the property for those who want to extend their stay, with basic facilities including a shelter shed, toilets, a hot shower, and tank water. No power is supplied. Dogs are strictly prohibited on the property at all times.
During winter months access requires a call-ahead to arrange a gate key and permit. The property is 25 km from Port Lincoln and the last section is unsealed road, so allow adequate travel time.
