Mount Lofty Botanic Garden
Cool-climate garden magic
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Perched high in the Adelaide Hills at around 600 metres elevation, the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden is one of Australia's finest cool-climate gardens. Spread across 97 hectares of deep valleys and ridges, it specialises in northern hemisphere species that thrive in the hills' cooler, wetter conditions, rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias, and an outstanding collection of conifers and deciduous trees that turn vivid gold and red each autumn.
The garden is managed by the Botanic Gardens of South Australia and is free to enter year-round. Spring brings an explosion of colour as thousands of rhododendrons and azaleas flower across the hillsides, while autumn draws photographers and families to admire the leaf change along the valley floor. The accessible Lakeside Trail offers a flat bitumen path with braille interpretation boards, making it one of the more inclusive walks in the region.
Two car parks serve the garden, one off Mount Lofty Summit Road for the upper slopes and another off Lampert Road near the lake and valley floor. Parking fees apply on weekdays and Saturdays, but entry to the garden itself is always free. The garden closes on days when the fire danger rating reaches extreme or catastrophic.
