Mpaara Walk and the Amphitheatre

The trail begins near the Palm Valley campground and carpark, initially following the rocky ledge path that runs alongside the 4WD entry track before branching away toward the junction of Palm Creek and the Finke River. Interpretive signage is spaced along the route so that each panel adds a new layer to the Mpaara creation story, with the final revelation at the highest point of the circuit. From the top, the full scale of the Amphitheatre becomes clear, a cathedral of red sandstone that is as impressive for its silence as for its geology.

The 5 km moderate loop takes approximately two hours at a comfortable pace, with some rocky and uneven sections on the ascent. Walkers should carry at least 2 litres of water per person and wear sun protection, particularly during the warmer months of October to March. Closed footwear with grip is recommended. Combined with the Kalarranga Lookout walk, the Mpaara Walk fills a rewarding half-day for those based at the Palm Valley campground. A high-clearance 4WD is required to reach the trailhead and an NT Parks Visitor Pass must be purchased before entering the park.
