Australia's motoring story
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
The National Motor Museum in Birdwood holds one of the largest collections of motor vehicles in the southern hemisphere, tracing Australia's love affair with the car and motorcycle from the 1890s to today.
Housed partly in a restored 1852 flour mill on the banks of the Torrens River, the museum displays more than 400 vehicles across its galleries and grounds. The collection ranges from veteran and vintage cars to muscle cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles, alongside rotating exhibitions on Australian motoring culture.
The museum is run by the History Trust of South Australia and is the finishing point each year for the Bay to Birdwood, one of the largest gatherings of historic vehicles in the world.
