Port Macquarie Breakwall and Painted Rocks

The breakwall was first constructed in 1904 to protect vessels crossing the Hastings River bar, with a northern wall added in 1932. The painted rock tradition began when a local service club organised an art competition on the rocks, and the practice has continued organically ever since. Colours and images are layered over one another across the seasons, so the gallery never looks the same twice.

The walk is entirely flat, paved and accessible, running about one kilometre along the riverfront before curving around to the back of Town Beach. Along the way there are benches to sit on, views across the wide estuary, and frequent sightings of dolphins riding the river current. A playground and skate park sit just behind Town Beach Reserve at the far end.

Entry is completely free, and the walk is open at all hours. It connects naturally with the longer Port Macquarie Coastal Walk, making it a good starting point for anyone exploring the town on foot.
