South West Rocks
Trial Bay Gaol, coral diving and uncrowded Mid North Coast beaches
On the lands of the Dunghutti people.
A small beach town on a headland between Horseshoe Bay and Trial Bay, home to the striking ruins of Trial Bay Gaol and some of the best subtropical dive sites on the New South Wales coast. South West Rocks sits where the warm East Australian Current pushes tropical marine life further south than almost anywhere else on the mainland.
South West Rocks occupies a rocky headland on Dunghutti country where the Macleay River approaches the Pacific. The town wraps around two bays and faces the open ocean, with Trial Bay on the western side and Horseshoe Bay on the east.
Trial Bay Gaol is the most photographed landmark. Built from local granite between 1877 and 1886, the gaol was intended to house prisoners who would build a harbour of refuge in the bay. The harbour was never completed and the prison closed in 1903. It reopened briefly during the First World War as an internment camp for German nationals. Today the ruins stand on the grassy headland with ocean views through the barred windows, and it is one of the most atmospheric historic sites on the coast.
The diving is what brings serious ocean visitors. Fish Rock Cave, a few kilometres offshore at Smoky Cape, is a 125-metre long cave system that grey nurse sharks use as a cleaning station. It is one of the best shark dives in Australia and the southernmost coral cave dive on the east coast. The warm currents bring manta rays, turtles and tropical fish species to the area year-round.
Horseshoe Bay is a calm, crystal-clear swimming beach that is excellent for snorkelling directly off the sand. The Smoky Cape Lighthouse, a 19th century granite tower on the headland above the town, has a walking track to the summit and offers accommodation in the restored keeper's cottage.
