Covering 120 hectares on the slopes above Olinda, the R.J. Hamer Arboretum is one of Australia's most significant collections of exotic and native trees, planted in national groupings to recreate the feel of forests from North America, Europe, China, and Japan. The arboretum is managed by Parks Victoria and is open every day of the year, with free entry and a network of walking trails through spectacular mature plantings.

Named after former Victorian Premier Sir Rupert Hamer, the arboretum has matured into a living collection of over 150 tree species. The North American section features towering Douglas firs and redwoods, while the European plantings include beeches, oaks, and chestnuts that blaze with colour each autumn. Sweeping views over the Silvan Reservoir and surrounding ranges can be found along the upper trails.

Facilities at the main Chalet Road car park include picnic tables, barbecues, toilets, and an information shelter. Dogs are welcome on leads throughout the arboretum, making it a popular destination for local walkers year-round. The open trail network suits walkers of most fitness levels, with flat woodland loops and more elevated ridge tracks available.

The arboretum is accessible to pedestrians at all hours, with the car park and facilities available during daylight hours. It closes on days of Extreme Fire Danger Rating. The autumn colour season from late March to early June draws visitors from across Victoria.
