Squeaky Beach is one of the most photographed spots at Wilsons Promontory, famous for the distinct high-pitched squeak its fine white quartz sand makes with every footstep. Framed by dramatic granite boulders at each end and overlooking the clear waters of Leonard Bay, the beach rewards visitors with brilliant turquoise water and a natural curiosity that delights all ages.

The squeaking is caused by the unusually rounded, spherical quartz grains rubbing against each other under pressure. Constant reworking by coastal winds keeps the grains smooth and uniform, which amplifies the effect compared with ordinary beaches. The result is a beach that sounds almost musical on a dry, calm day.

Squeaky Beach can be reached via a short walk from the Squeaky Beach Carpark or as part of a longer loop from Tidal River and Picnic Bay. The surrounding granite headlands provide sheltered spots to sit and take in views across Leonard Bay toward the offshore islands.

Swimming here is at your own risk as the beach is unpatrolled. Strong currents, rough surf, and submerged rocks can pose hazards, so visitors should exercise caution and check conditions before entering the water.
