A 2.2-kilometre return climb through Tomaree National Park leads to the 161-metre summit of Tomaree Head, rewarding walkers with sweeping views across Port Stephens, the Myall Lakes coastline, and the Pacific Ocean. The track is steep and stepped but clearly signposted, and the spectacle at the top, framing both the bay and the open ocean, makes it one of the most celebrated short walks on the NSW coast.
The trail begins at the lower Zenith Beach carpark off Shoal Bay Road, where the path immediately starts climbing through coastal heath and eucalypt scrub. With a total elevation gain of around 165 metres, the ascent takes most walkers between 45 minutes and an hour each way, with rocky steps and exposed sections demanding solid footwear.
At the summit, 360-degree views take in Shoal Bay, Nelson Bay marina, Yacaaba Head, and on clear days the distant hills behind Newcastle. A picnic table at the top makes it easy to linger. The headland also has historical significance, wartime observation posts and gun emplacements from World War II are visible near the peak.
The park is open at all times but may close temporarily in extreme weather or fire danger conditions. No entry fee or vehicle pass is required. The carpark at Zenith Beach is free.
