Established in 1858, Tyrrell's is one of Australia's most storied family wineries, now in its fifth generation of the Tyrrell family. The estate cellar door at Broke Road sits at the heart of a working vineyard and offers structured guided tastings across a range of wines, with the legendary Vat 1 Semillon, one of Australia's most awarded white wines, a perennial highlight.
Tyrrell's approach to tastings is deliberately hands-on. Guests join guided sessions at set times throughout the day, led by knowledgeable cellar door staff who walk through the estate's history and wine philosophy. The standard tasting is great value, with premium and vertical tasting experiences available for more serious enthusiasts. Bookings are preferred, and the historic property, known as Ashmans, provides a genuine insight into the craft of Hunter Valley winemaking.
The estate grounds include picnic areas, BBQ facilities, and shaded lawns where guests can linger after their tasting. With more than 165 years of continuous family winemaking behind it, Tyrrell's occupies a singular place in Australian wine history, and a visit here feels like a genuine encounter with that legacy rather than a polished tourism exercise.
