Werribee Park Mansion
Grand pastoral estate tour
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Built in 1877 for pastoral magnates Thomas and Andrew Chirnside, Werribee Park Mansion is one of Victoria's most impressive examples of Renaissance Revival architecture. The 60-room bluestone homestead sits within ten hectares of formal gardens on a vast estate 35 kilometres west of Melbourne, and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
Guided and audio tours take visitors through the mansion's richly decorated reception rooms, grand staircase, Minton tile flooring and private family quarters, painting a vivid picture of squattocracy life in colonial Victoria. The estate has served as a filming location for productions including Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.
The surrounding formal gardens are a separate pleasure entirely, open free of charge to anyone who visits the estate. The ten-hectare landscape features an ornamental lake, a grotto, a heritage orchard planted by the Chirnsides in the late 1800s, and sweeping lawns planted with exotic species alongside Australian natives.
The gardens adjoin the Victoria State Rose Garden, making it easy to combine both attractions in a single half-day visit. Entry to the mansion's interior requires a ticket purchased at the door.
