Wombeyan Karst Conservation Reserve
Ancient limestone caves in hidden tablelands
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Wombeyan Karst Conservation Reserve protects one of Australia's most significant cave systems, tucked into a remote limestone valley accessible via the winding road through Taralga. The reserve was the first area in Australia set aside for cave protection, gazetted in 1865, and today offers four distinct show caves ranging from easy self-guided walks to guided tours through multi-level chambers. Dramatic columns, rippled draperies, shimmering stalactites and underground rivers make each cave a world apart from the eucalypt forest above.
The four show caves each offer a different experience. Fig Tree Cave is a family-friendly self-guided tour running daily from 9:00am to 3:30pm, priced at $20 per adult. Wollondilly Cave - the longest and most complex cave on site - is explored on a guided tour at 1:00pm weekdays and 10:30am or 1:00pm on weekends ($24 per adult). Mulwaree Cave and Kooringa Cave offer additional guided options with striking formations. A two-cave combo pass bundles Fig Tree and Wollondilly caves with a saving, and a family pass is available for $50.
Beyond the caves, a wheelchair-accessible walking track leads to the natural limestone arch of Victoria Arch in 10 to 20 minutes. The reserve also offers camping, cabin accommodation and several bushwalking tracks through the surrounding karst landscape. The Wombeyan Caves office is open 9:00am to 4:30pm daily (closed Christmas Day). Mobile reception is very limited, so refuel your vehicle and download maps before leaving Goulburn or Taralga.
