Yering Station
Victoria's first vineyard, still pouring
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Yering Station holds a unique place in Australian wine history as Victoria's first vineyard, established in 1838. The cellar door occupies the original stone winery building from 1859, creating a rare combination of genuinely historic architecture and award-winning contemporary wine. Set on Melba Highway in Yarra Glen, the estate produces pinot noir, chardonnay and shiraz viognier that regularly earn national recognition.
The cellar door welcomes walk-in visitors for tastings throughout the week and is open seven days. The heritage winery building, with its thick bluestone walls and timber beams, provides an atmospheric tasting room unlike the modern facilities common elsewhere in the valley. Wines are poured across a broad range, from the entry-level Yering Station label through to the prestige Village and Reserve tiers.
The on-site restaurant, YS Kitchen, serves modern Australian lunch and has become a destination in its own right. The sculpture park adjoining the cellar door features rotating works from Australian artists. In spring and summer the outdoor terrace, looking out over the original vineyard block, is one of the most pleasant places to spend an afternoon in the Yarra Valley.
