Dark Mofo
The winter companion to MONA's summer festival, Dark Mofo turns Hobart into a fire-lit, industrial-art playground in June.
Two weeks of large-scale public art, music, fire, food and mild chaos across Hobart in June, presented by the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA).
Dark Mofo is a winter arts festival presented by the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart, Tasmania. It runs for two weeks every June and has grown, since it was founded in 2013, into one of the most distinctive arts festivals in Australia. It is deliberately contrarian, experimental and confrontational, and has built a cult following of visitors who travel across the country specifically for it.
The festival mixes large-scale public art installations, experimental music, fire-lit processions, the Winter Feast food market at Hobart's Princes Wharf, and the infamous Nude Solstice Swim in the River Derwent on the morning of the winter solstice. Music programming has included artists ranging from Marina Abramovic to Laibach and FKA Twigs.
The festival is closely linked to MONA itself, which is worth visiting at any time and is included in the Dark Mofo itineraries of most visitors. Hobart accommodation books out three to four months ahead for the duration. Expect cold weather (winter Hobart regularly drops below 5 degrees) and bring serious layers.
