Splendour in the Grass
Australia's biggest greenfield music festival, held in the Byron Bay hinterland over a long winter weekend.
Splendour in the Grass is Australia's biggest annual greenfield music festival, held over three days each July at North Byron Parklands in the Byron Bay hinterland.
Splendour in the Grass is Australia's biggest annual greenfield music festival and has run almost continuously since 2001. It is held over three days each July at North Byron Parklands, a purpose-built festival site in the hills 20 minutes north of Byron Bay. The festival programme is dominated by international rock, indie, electronic and hip hop headliners, and has previously hosted artists including Kanye West, Coldplay, The Strokes, Florence + The Machine, Tame Impala, Childish Gambino and Billie Eilish.
The site has multiple stages running simultaneously across the long weekend, plus a comedy tent, a forum stage for talks and panels, food markets, art installations and a parallel Tipi Forest precinct. Camping is the standard option for most attendees, with an enormous tent city set up on the surrounding paddocks. A more upscale glamping village runs as a paid option for those who want hotel-style amenities on site.
Splendour is mid-winter in the Northern Rivers, which means warm days and cold nights, with temperatures typically dropping into single digits after dark. Pack accordingly. Tickets generally sell out within an hour of release and the secondary market is volatile, so anyone who wants to go should be on the announcement mailing list well ahead of time.
Byron Bay accommodation books out for the long weekend, and the inland small towns of Mullumbimby, Brunswick Heads and Bangalow offer slightly cheaper alternatives. Most attendees fly in to the Gold Coast or Ballina airports.
