Spring Racing Carnival
Two months of premier thoroughbred racing across Melbourne, anchored by the Melbourne Cup but featuring multiple Group 1 races and major social events.
Melbourne's Spring Racing Carnival is the most prestigious thoroughbred racing season in the southern hemisphere, running from late September through November and culminating in the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday of November.
The Spring Racing Carnival is the premier thoroughbred racing season in Australia and one of the largest in the world. It runs from late September through November across Melbourne's three main racecourses (Flemington, Caulfield and Moonee Valley) and includes more than a dozen Group 1 races, multiple international stakes events, and the most-watched horse race in Australia.
The carnival is anchored by the Melbourne Cup, run on the first Tuesday of November at Flemington, but the surrounding programme includes the Caulfield Cup (one of the world's richest 2400m handicaps), the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley (a weight-for-age championship that often hosts top international entries), the Victoria Derby, the Oaks (women's-only fashion-on-the-field day), and Stakes Day, which together make up the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival.
The social side of the carnival is as significant as the racing itself. Fashions on the Field, the Birdcage marquee enclosure and the corporate hospitality scene fill the Flemington straight from the Cox Plate forward. Melbourne's biggest restaurants book solid through November, accommodation prices spike, and the city takes on a festival mood for the duration.
Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday in Victoria but not in other states, though offices across Australia traditionally pause for the 3pm race. Public transport is the standard way to reach Flemington and runs on a special carnival timetable. International visitors should book accommodation at least three months ahead for any of the Group 1 days.
