Campbells Wines
Five generations of Rutherglen craft
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Founded in 1870 by Scottish emigrant John Campbell - who originally came to Rutherglen seeking gold - Campbells Wines has spent five generations perfecting the art of Rutherglen Muscat and Topaque on the same site where it all began. Sisters Jane and Julie Campbell now lead the estate, with Julie serving as winemaker and continuing a lineage that produced the Merchant Prince Muscat, which earned a perfect 100-point score from Wine Spectator in 2010. The cellar door is renowned for one of the most extensive tastings in the region, with back vintages readily available.
The estate's story is one of tenacity: surviving phylloxera in 1898 required 20 years of replanting, and the Depression forced the family into sheep farming to stay afloat. Out of that adversity came the Bobbie Burns Shiraz, first released in 1970 and now in more than 50 consecutive vintages. Behind-the-scenes guided cellar tours reveal the depth of that history, and blending sessions let visitors create their own Muscat under winemaker guidance.
The cellar door is family- and dog-friendly, with tasting flights matched to locally sourced food. Opening hours run Monday to Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday and public holidays 10 am to 4 pm. The estate is located approximately 3 km west of Rutherglen's main street along the Murray Valley Highway, making it an easy first or last stop on a cellar door circuit.
