Edithburgh Tidal Pool
Tidal swimming since the 1880s
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Carved into the limestone cliffs at the base of O'Halloran Parade, the Edithburgh Tidal Pool has offered safe, calm swimming since the 1880s when separate bathing areas were created during the town's busy port days. Naturally filled and refreshed by Gulf St Vincent tides, the pool reaches a maximum depth of around 0.9 metres and is framed by a colourful mural celebrating the region's marine and bird life.
The pool sits just below a grassy reserve with BBQ facilities, picnic tables, public toilets, and easy parking, making it a natural gathering spot for families and swimmers of every age. Steps cut into the rock provide easy water access, and the surrounding lawn is a favourite place to spread a towel and watch the sun drop behind the gulf.
Edithburgh itself is a quiet coastal town roughly 230 kilometres south of Adelaide. The nearby jetty, cemetery, and heritage-listed hotel round out a half-day or full-day visit. The pool is also a popular venue for learn-to-swim sessions during school holiday periods.
Swimming is possible at any time of year, with summer bringing the warmest water temperatures. Early mornings and sunset swims are particularly popular for the light they cast across the gulf and the limestone cliffs.
