Fighter World
Australia's fighter aircraft heritage
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Fighter World is the RAAF Base Williamtown Aviation Heritage Centre, a volunteer-run museum housing more than 15 aircraft at the entrance to one of Australia's most active air force bases. From a hand-built replica Sopwith Camel to a Cold War-era Mirage III and the Korean War-vintage Gloster Meteor, the collection tells the story of a century of military aviation.
The museum is operated by a not-for-profit organisation on behalf of the Royal Australian Air Force. Aircraft are displayed both indoors and in the open air, with interpretive panels explaining each type's operational history and the crews who flew them. The Avon Sabre, an Australian-designed development of the F-86, is a centrepiece of the collection alongside more recent types that served with the RAAF.
Regular guided tours are available, and the gift shop stocks aviation books, prints, and scale models. The museum also hosts special open days linked to air force events throughout the year, when additional aircraft and displays may be on show. Bookings are recommended, particularly for group visits.
Fighter World is located just off the highway between Newcastle and Nelson Bay, making it a natural first or last stop on a Port Stephens trip from the south.
