Govetts Leap Lookout
Grose Valley's grand amphitheatre
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Standing at the rim of the Grose Valley near Blackheath, Govetts Leap delivers one of the most dramatic lookout experiences in the Blue Mountains. A 180-metre waterfall plunges from the cliff directly below the viewing platform into a vast green valley ringed by towering sandstone walls, with the Blue Gum Forest visible far below.
The lookout is named after surveyor William Govett, who mapped the area in 1831. An accessible viewing platform sits just 50 metres from the carpark, with sealed paths, picnic tables and toilet facilities on site. The adjacent Blue Mountains Heritage Centre houses displays on the natural and cultural history of the region and is staffed by National Parks rangers daily.
Several walking tracks begin from the lookout precinct, including the wheelchair-accessible Fairfax Heritage Walk, a loop through scribbly gum woodland to additional viewpoints. More challenging options descend into the valley floor. Entry to the lookout and all walking tracks is free, and parking is available in the sealed carpark.
