The Hepburn Mineral Springs Reserve in Hepburn Springs is where the spa country story truly begins. Established in 1865 as Australia's first mineral reserve, this heritage parkland protects a cluster of naturally carbonated springs that have been used for drinking and bathing for over 160 years. The reserve is free to enter and open at all times, making it a favourite for a leisurely walk and a taste of the famous mineral water.
Walking paths loop through the reserve connecting a series of named mineral pumps, including Soda, Sulphur, Pavilion, and Locarno springs, where visitors can fill bottles with fresh mineral water free of charge. Each spring has a slightly different mineral composition and taste, from lightly carbonated to sharply mineral, and comparing them is a local ritual.
The Victorian Heritage Register-listed landscape includes open lawns, picnic areas, barbecues, and a children's playground, making it a relaxed outing for families. The reserve also forms the gateway to the Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa, which sits at its western end.
The heritage Hepburn Pavilion, a graceful timber structure dating from the early 1900s, houses a cafe and is a scenic focal point of the reserve. An easy walking trail connects the reserve to Lake Daylesford via Hepburn Springs township.
