Perched at Tongue Point on Whitsunday Island, Hill Inlet Lookout rewards visitors with one of Australia's most breathtaking coastal panoramas. As the tide moves in and out, brilliant white silica sand swirls through turquoise and aquamarine water in ever-changing patterns, stretching alongside the full length of Whitehaven Beach below. No two visits look exactly alike.

Access to the lookout is by boat only, with most visitors arriving at Tongue Bay via organised day tours departing Coral Sea Marina in Airlie Beach. From the landing point, a well-maintained 1.3-kilometre bushwalking track winds through coastal scrub to the elevated viewing platforms, taking around 30 to 45 minutes return.

The lookout is situated within Whitsunday Islands National Park and is managed by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. Almost all tours combine time at the lookout with beach access at Whitehaven Beach during the same excursion, making it easy to experience both in a single day.

The best views occur around low tide, when the sand patterns are at their most dramatic and the contrasting water colours are most vivid. Photographers and couples in particular find the outlook exceptional at this time, as the swirling patterns shift with each tidal cycle throughout the day.
