Hippo's Yawn
Granite cave like a gaping hippo

Hippo's Yawn is a shallow granite cave formation standing about 12 metres tall at its curved mouth, its resemblance to a yawning hippopotamus giving it its memorable name. Located a short walk from the Wave Rock car park, it is the second most visited natural attraction in the Hyden area and rewards visitors with a striking composition for photographs from inside the cave looking out.
The cave is reached via an easy 1.7-kilometre loop trail that begins at the Wave Rock car park, taking around 30 to 40 minutes to complete. The path is clearly signed, mostly hardened, and suitable for a range of abilities. Hippo's Yawn was once part of a larger granite outcrop before erosion separated it from the main formation over millions of years.
The loop trail passes through low scrubland that comes alive with wildflowers from August to October, including ground orchids such as greenhoods and spider orchids. Interpretive signs along the route explain the local geology and ecology. The walk is dog-friendly and offers a pleasant alternative circuit for visitors who want more than just the main Wave Rock viewing area.
Entry to Hippo's Yawn is covered by the Wave Rock vehicle entry ticket, so there is no separate charge.
