Mataranka Thermal Pool, also known as Rainbow Spring, is one of two natural thermal swimming holes in Elsey National Park, fed by the vast Cambrian Limestone Aquifer at a constant 34 degrees Celsius. The pool sits within a grove of livistona palms and paperbarks and is open for swimming year-round. A NT Parks Visitor Pass is required for entry.
The spring discharges an extraordinary 30.5 million litres of crystal-clear, geothermally warmed water every day, forming the headwaters of the Roper River. The pool is accessible via Homestead Road, just south of the Mataranka Homestead Tourist Resort, with paved paths, stairs with handrails leading into the water, and an accessible carpark.
Walking trails fan out from the pool into the surrounding tropical woodland, including a 500-metre loop through the livistona palms and a 16-kilometre riverside trail. The springs hold deep cultural significance for Aboriginal communities of the region. Visitors should check current conditions with the ranger station before planning longer walks, as some sections close periodically for flood damage repairs.
The dry season from May to October brings the most comfortable conditions and greatest visitor numbers, but the pool is accessible all year. Book a NT Parks Visitor Pass online before arriving.
