Meelup Beach and Regional Park
Protected bay with coastal walking trails
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Meelup Beach is a picture-perfect crescent of white sand tucked inside a sheltered north-facing bay about eight minutes' drive from Dunsborough. Protected within Meelup Regional Park - a 577-hectare A-class reserve covering 11.5 kilometres of coastline - the beach is the anchor point for a network of walking trails linking Eagle Bay, Point Piquet, and Cape Naturaliste along one of the south-west's most scenic coastlines.
The foreshore at Meelup is well-equipped for families and day-trippers, with shaded lawn areas, gas barbecues, toilet and shower facilities, and a large car park. The water inside the bay is calm and shallow close to shore, making it one of the safest swimming beaches in the Dunsborough area. During summer evenings around the full moon, a popular tradition sees visitors gather on the beach to watch the moon rise directly over the Indian Ocean horizon.
Beyond the beach, the park protects significant coastal heath and woodland that harbours endemic species including the Meelup mallee shrub and the cape spider orchid. Wildlife watchers may spot western ringtail possums, three species of black cockatoo, and southern brown bandicoots. Point Piquet, reachable via the coastal trail, has a dedicated whale-viewing platform from which humpback and southern right whales are frequently seen between June and December as they rest in Geographe Bay.
