Occupying the former Moonta Mines Model School - a building erected in 1878 at the height of the copper boom - this National Trust museum tells the story of the Cornish miners who made Moonta South Australia's second-largest town by 1870. Fourteen themed rooms of period costumes, china, silverware, photographs, and a preserved circa-1900 classroom bring the mining community vividly to life.

Copper was discovered near Moonta in 1861 when a shepherd noticed mineral traces near a wombat burrow, sparking a rush that drew thousands of Cornish miners and their families. By the 1870s the Moonta Mines were among the richest copper operations in the southern hemisphere. The museum's themed rooms walk visitors through domestic life, religious culture, and industrial history across the boom decades before mining ceased in 1923 when copper prices collapsed. Highlights include period-dressed mannequins, original documents, and an 1900-era classroom with furniture and teaching materials in place.

The museum sits within the broader 320-hectare Moonta Mines National Heritage Area, declared State Heritage in 1984 and added to the National Heritage List in 2017. Five walking trails radiate from the precinct, and the adjacent platform was once used by the Moonta Mines Tourist Railway (currently closed for safety works by the National Trust). The Moonta Mines Visitor Centre nearby is open daily from 9am to 5pm and can answer questions about current site access. The museum closes on days when the Bureau of Meteorology forecast reaches 37 degrees Celsius or above.
