Ngilgi Cave
Living limestone cave and Aboriginal story
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Ngilgi Cave in Yallingup is one of the most spectacular show caves in Australia, formed over millions of years within the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge. Visitors explore glistening chambers adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, and translucent shawls of calcite, all woven together with the Ancient Lands Experience - an above-ground pathway that tells the story of the Wadandi Noongar people's deep connection to this landscape.
The cave has been open to visitors since 1899, making it one of Western Australia's oldest tourist attractions, and today it is managed by the Capes Foundation under a partnership with the Wadandi people. The self-guided underground journey covers 350 steps through illuminated chambers, with guides stationed throughout to answer questions. The separate Ancient Lands Experience unfolds along an accessible outdoor pathway of sensory installations, carved panels, and audio storytelling that draws on more than 40,000 years of Wadandi cultural knowledge.
The cave environment maintains a cool 17 degrees Celsius year-round, making it an ideal wet-season or summer-heat escape. Families with young children benefit from a dedicated play area and an optional crawl tunnel that adds an adventurous touch for older kids. Yallingup is approximately 20 minutes north of Dunsborough along Caves Road, and the cave sits just off the main road with ample parking and a kiosk on site.
