Riesling Trail
35 kilometres of scenic rail trail
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
The Riesling Trail follows the bed of a former railway line for 35 kilometres through the heart of the Clare Valley, linking Auburn in the south to Barinia north of Clare. Open to walkers, cyclists, runners, and wheelchair users, it passes directly alongside vineyards and cellar doors, making it as much a wine and food journey as a physical one. Bike hire is available in both Auburn and Clare.
South Australia's first rail-to-trail conversion, the Riesling Trail reopened in 1994 and has since become one of the most popular recreational corridors in the state, attracting around 100,000 users each year. The sealed, largely flat surface makes it accessible for families with prams and riders of all fitness levels.
Three loop trails branch off the main route, allowing visitors to complete circular rides without retracing their path. Along the way, stops at Watervale, Sevenhill, and Clare provide cafes, cellar doors, and picnic areas. Drinking fountains have been installed at several points along the route.
The trail is best done over a full day or split across two sessions. Many visitors hire bikes in Clare, ride south to Auburn for lunch at the old railway station, then arrange a shuttle back. The gentle gradient, bird life, and vine rows make it equally rewarding on foot.
