Seal Bay

Walk on the beach among Australia's third-largest colony of Australian sea lions

A conservation park on the south coast of Kangaroo Island where guided walks take visitors onto the beach among a resident colony of around 800 Australian sea lions. It is one of the few places in the world where you can walk within metres of wild sea lions in their natural habitat.

Seal Bay Conservation Park sits on the exposed southern coast of Kangaroo Island, about 60 kilometres south-west of Kingscote. The park protects one of the largest mainland colonies of the Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea), an endangered species found only along the southern coastline of Australia. Around 800 sea lions use the beach and surrounding dunes as a resting and nursing site between their multi-day fishing trips into the Southern Ocean.

The guided beach walk is the main experience and what makes Seal Bay unique. A Parks SA ranger leads small groups down a boardwalk and then directly onto the beach, walking among the resting sea lions at a respectful distance of about five to ten metres. The sea lions are habituated to human presence and typically continue sleeping, nursing or play-fighting as visitors pass. The rangers provide commentary on individual animals, breeding cycles and conservation challenges. Tours run multiple times daily and last about 45 minutes.

Australian sea lions are unusual among pinnipeds because they do not breed on a synchronised annual cycle. Instead each colony breeds on its own roughly 17 to 18 month cycle, which means there are pups and nursing mothers on the beach at almost any time of year. The species is listed as endangered, with an estimated total population of only around 12,000 animals along the entire southern coast.

A self-guided boardwalk option is also available for visitors who prefer to observe from above the beach. The elevated walkway runs along the dune crest and offers broad views of the colony without stepping onto the sand. Interpretive panels along the boardwalk explain the sea lion life cycle and the conservation work being done at the site.

Seal Bay is one of the anchor attractions of any Kangaroo Island visit and is typically combined with Flinders Chase National Park, Vivonne Bay and the Remarkable Rocks on a two to three day island itinerary. The park is open year-round but bookings for guided tours are recommended in peak season (December to February and school holidays).
