The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, known as TMAG, is Tasmania's leading natural and cultural heritage institution and one of the oldest museums in Australia. Located a short walk from Hobart's waterfront, it holds extensive collections covering Tasmanian history, Aboriginal heritage, natural science, decorative arts, and contemporary and historical fine art, all under one roof and free to enter.

TMAG occupies a complex of heritage buildings near Sullivans Cove, incorporating structures dating from the 1840s. Its galleries explore the deep history of Tasmania from the first peoples through the convict era, colonial settlement, and into the present day. The natural history collections include specimens of the thylacine and other extinct or rare fauna, providing a sobering and scientifically important record of the island's biodiversity.

The art collection spans colonial landscapes and portraits through to significant contemporary Tasmanian and Australian works. Temporary exhibitions rotate regularly, covering topics from science and environment to photography and design. Free guided tours are available for visitors who want a deeper introduction to the collections.

TMAG is open Tuesday to Sunday during most of the year and daily during the summer period. An on-site cafe and a well-stocked gift shop are available. The museum is family-friendly and accessible, with facilities for visitors with mobility requirements.
