The Basin and Pinky Beach

The Basin is a naturally sheltered ocean pool on the north-east coast of Rottnest Island, protected by a limestone reef and renowned for some of the clearest water in Western Australia. A short walk away, Pinky Beach offers a longer stretch of white sand perfect for watching sunsets over the Indian Ocean. Together they form the island's most popular coastal precinct, easily reached on foot or by bike from the main settlement.
The Basin sits between Pinky Beach and Longreach Bay. Its reef creates calm, shallow water that is ideal for families and beginner snorkellers, with colourful fish, corals, and occasional rays visible in the turquoise shallows. The area has refurbished facilities including outdoor showers, barbecues, drinking water and toilets.
Pinky Beach, just a few hundred metres west, is sheltered by an undulating coral reef and is one of the island's most popular spots for beginner snorkelling. The soft white sand and gentle surf make it suitable for young children. Snorkel sets can be hired in the main settlement.
Both beaches are within a 10-minute walk of Thomson Bay ferry terminal, making them an easy first stop off the ferry. The Basin in particular fills quickly on school holidays, so an early morning visit rewards you with near-empty water.
