Tolmer Falls
Dramatic viewpoint above a gorge
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Tolmer Falls is one of Litchfield National Park's most visually striking waterfalls, a tall, slender cascade dropping from the escarpment edge into a gorge that shelters a colony of orange horseshoe bats, a species rare in the Northern Territory. A short sealed pathway from the carpark leads to an accessible viewing platform that frames the falls against the surrounding escarpment.
The 400-metre walk from the carpark to the main viewing platform is sealed and suitable for visitors with limited mobility. A further 1.6-kilometre return walk along a moderate trail climbs to a rim viewpoint with broader views across the escarpment. The best time to see Tolmer Falls at full flow is during the wet season or the early dry, when the cascade is most powerful.
Swimming and camping are not permitted at Tolmer Falls, as the gorge provides critical habitat for the orange horseshoe bat colony and is protected accordingly. The site is a sightseeing and walking destination only. Picnic tables and public toilets are available near the carpark.
Tolmer Falls is accessible by 2WD vehicle and is signposted from Litchfield Park Road. The nearby Cascades site offers a swimming alternative for those wanting to cool off after the walk. An NT Parks Visitor Pass is required.
