The Cascades
Quiet rock pools to explore
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
The Cascades is one of Litchfield National Park's quieter swimming destinations, a series of tiered rock pools and gentle cascades spread across a rocky sandstone plateau, offering visitors room to spread out and find their own private pool or natural spa. It is less visited than Florence Falls or Wangi Falls, making it a favourite among those who prefer a more solitary experience.
Two walking routes serve the site: the Lower Cascades walk (2.6 kilometres return) and the Upper Cascades loop (3.3 kilometres). Both are graded moderate to difficult, with terrain described as steep, slippery and uneven. Sturdy footwear and ample water are essential.
No camping is permitted at the Cascades. Picnic tables and public toilets are provided near the carpark. The site is accessible by 2WD vehicle and is signposted from Litchfield Park Road. Swimming is available in designated pool areas; conditions should be assessed on arrival, as the terrain can be hazardous.
The Cascades is best visited outside the peak midday heat, with early morning or late afternoon walks recommended given the exposed, sun-facing sections of both trails. An NT Parks Visitor Pass is required.
