Kennett River Koala Walk

Grey River Road at Kennett River is widely regarded as one of the most reliable places in Australia to spot wild koalas. The unsealed road winds uphill through manna gum forest where koalas live in unusually high numbers, often visible in the branches just metres from the road. Access is free, the walk is easy, and the experience of seeing these animals in their natural habitat is consistently memorable.
To reach the walk, park near the cafe on the Great Ocean Road and look for the unsealed Grey River Road heading inland. Koalas are most visible in the first few kilometres, though the road continues into the Otways for those who want a longer outing. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to visit, when koalas are more active. Look for movement in the fork of branches rather than searching for the whole animal.
King parrots, kookaburras, and wallabies are common companions along the route, adding to the wildlife experience. The riverside setting at Kennett River is peaceful and pretty. Visitors are asked to admire koalas from a safe distance and never to feed or attempt to touch the animals, as this causes them serious stress.
