Nature's Window and the Loop Trail
Framed views of ancient stone
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Nature's Window is a wind-eroded arch of layered sandstone that frames a perfect view of the Murchison River gorge below, making it one of the most photographed natural features in Western Australia. Located in the inland section of Kalbarri National Park, it can be reached on a short 800-metre return walk or woven into the demanding 9-kilometre Loop Trail that follows the river's edge through a landscape of towering canyon walls.
The short walk to Nature's Window is graded moderate and suits most fitness levels, rewarding visitors with the iconic framed river view in around 30 to 45 minutes. The full Loop Trail is more challenging and typically takes three to five hours. It drops into the gorge, follows rocky ledges along the Murchison River, and delivers an intimate experience of the canyon walls that the lookout walk cannot match. The Loop Trail is closed after 7am from November to March inclusive due to extreme summer heat.
The banded rocks throughout the gorge are Tumblagooda Sandstone formed on ancient tidal flats around 400 million years ago. There is no drinking water anywhere along the trail, so carrying at least three litres per person is essential. Spring wildflowers bloom in the surrounding heath from July to October. A national park pass is required for entry.
