Kathleen Springs Walk
Sealed path to a desert spring
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
The Kathleen Springs Walk is Watarrka National Park's most accessible trail, a fully sealed 2.4 km return path suitable for wheelchairs and prams, leading through ghost gums and old cattle stockyards to a permanent spring-fed waterhole at the head of Kathleen Gorge. Located 21 km by road from Kings Canyon, it offers a quieter, family-friendly alternative to the canyon walks.
The sealed pathway winds gently through spinifex grassland and scattered mulga scrub, passing the remnants of old station stockyards that speak to the area's pastoral history. Interpretive signs along the route explain both the Aboriginal cultural significance of the springs to the Luritja people and the cattle industry that shaped the region in the 19th and 20th centuries.
At the end of the trail, a tranquil waterhole sits beneath the rocky walls of Kathleen Gorge, fed by underground springs that have sustained wildlife and travellers for thousands of years. The cool, clear water attracts birds and reptiles year-round, making it a rewarding spot for wildlife observation. Swimming is not permitted.
The walk is graded 1 (easy) and takes approximately 1.5 hours return at a comfortable pace. A NT Parks Visitor Pass ($10 adult day pass) is required. There is a car park and basic facilities at the trailhead. Heat management restrictions apply across the park during summer.
