Z Bend takes its name from the dramatic Z-shaped curve the Murchison River carves through the sandstone at this point in Kalbarri National Park, visible in full from the lookout platform 150 metres above. Roughly 30 kilometres inland from Kalbarri, it offers two distinct experiences, an easy lookout stroll with a sweeping panorama, and a steep, physically demanding descent all the way to the river's edge.

The lookout walk is 1.2 kilometres return and takes most visitors around one hour. From the viewing platform, the layered sandstone walls and the serpentine river create a scene that rewards wide-angle photography. Picnic tables and barbecue facilities at the carpark make this a comfortable base for families who want to pause and take in the surroundings.

The Z Bend River Trail descends a further 2.6 kilometres return from the lookout to the river itself, requiring scrambling over steep terrain and the use of fixed ladders. The trail demands solid fitness and sturdy footwear. Spring wildflowers including orchids, flame grevillea, and bird beak hakea bloom in the heath surrounding the site between July and October. A national park pass is required for access.
